They need a raise!

Because of testing last week we didn't have pay day until this week. At the end of the month, students not only get paid but they get to go shopping in the class store. Today as we were discussing our new jobs, I reminded students not to turn in an application for a job if they didn't think it was the right job for them.
So many times we have discussed the importance of performing a job without having to be reminded. This has made a huge impact when students are waiting on someone else because they didn't take care of their responsibilities.
The beautiful thing that has happened in these situations is the students that have stepped up and carried the load. As a teacher it's awesome to see the initiative in so many students.
Today I asked students to consider whether someone needed a raise for going above and beyond their duties. Their notes are precious and I wanted to share them with you.

Trevor's job is the caboose and he should be the last to line up. So many times others have tried to tell him to line up, but he never says anything to them. He is very respectful and just shakes his head.

I cannot tell you how many times students have walked out of the room going to lunch without their lunch box. The lunch boxes even sit on the floor right by the door! Allena ALWAYS picks up someone else's lunch box and sweetly hands it to them.

Kole's job is to be on vacation. He worked so hard in September, he got a break for October. Yet, he really has stepped up on a daily basis to carry the load.

I love the fact that they recognize what others have done! This is something I haven't done before, but I am so grateful I asked them to share their thoughts. I will give the notes to the students to keep so they can see what others thought about them.

Bumper Stickers

Students presented some fantastic Bumper Sticker Projects promoting their Endangered Animals.

Well I have tried for over an hour to get all of the pictures in the correct direction. It doesn't matter how many times I upload the picture and save it in the correct direction. It still rotates it! I'm sorry! I will see what I can figure out.

Greenville Journal-Project Based Learning

The Greenville Journal is a described as a "Community Journal" and provides readers with insights and news about life, education, and businesses in the Greenville Area. The front page of the October 4th edition caught my eye. I wanted to share the article with you since it's focus is on Project Based Learning.

The following quote stresses the value and importance of project based learning, “Project-based learning changes the answers to questions,” said DeeDee Washington, Greenville County Schools’ associate superintendent for academics. “Students have the opportunity for a voice. Students have the opportunity for choice. It requires a lot of planning and integration across content areas. Teachers become facilitators rather than dispensers of knowledge.”

Amazing Authors

This past week we began the research process by using resources to find answers to our questions. Each day we had a primary purpose and zoned in on answering that one question. We were able to decipher the relevant information from the information that did not support our question. From there, we learned how to take our notes and turn our information into sentences that inform.

This past summer I wrote a grant for Donors Choose for 30 student dictionaries and 120 blank books. I was thrilled when it was funded and couldn't wait to use the materials with my students. Students learned they would first create an informational book about the Peregrine Falcon using a blank book. They were so excited!!

Our entire class is currently researching to gain information on the appearance, habitat, characteristics, and the events that caused the animal to be classified as an endangered species. We have also learned what the animal eats and about the animals that love to eat them.

Our purpose is to support the process and guide them so they can be released to soar towards their own understandings as they become Amazing Authors. Here are some of the first photos of their work.

The first page we created was the Front cover. Then we turned our book over to create the back. We viewed several books to see what information other authors provide about themselves. Then we created our bio's.
A future "Animal Book Writer" indeed!

After creating our table of contents, we began creating our book.

Our mentor texts showed students how effective diagrams, captions, and labels could be for readers. We love knowing we can see the Falcon flying across Chimney Rock State Park in North Carolina and Table Rock State Park in South Carolina.

Next week we will finish writing and illustrating our books. THEN students will create their own book about an endangered animal. I can't wait until next week!

A Good Opportunity

Over the last several weeks we have embraced the Project Approach which encourages students to use inquiry, ask questions, solve problems, make connections and share their findings with others. Students recently learned about the Peregrine Falcon and how scientists helped the animal overcome the effects of DDT. We discussed the food chain and how DDT impacted more than one animal. I think Ally helped them understand it today. She asked if she could share with the class what she had read. I love when they are willing to share their knowledge, their discoveries, and their understandings with each other. The video was broken into two clips due to size.
